New website!

So you are probably wondering why the few previous blog posts on here are all from earlier this year despite a post date of today (August 14th). They are transfers from the old site (same actual web address). I didn't update that old blog or website much because it was very difficult to work with, and lacked a lot of needed functionality. So here we are now, in the wonderful world of wordpress. In the process of designing this new site I re-edited my photography portfolio and finally had a cine reel edited. Major thanks to Dillon Novak for help with both of those. Please check out the updated photography...

Of parabolic umbrellas

7/8/2012: The age old question, Softboxes vs Umbrellas...which is better? The answer is of course neither, they each have pros and cons depending on the situation. They each have a distinct quality of light, and with experience you can guess how the properties of light will effect your subject just by looking at one you've never even used before. That's the beauty of it, once you've used one or two you can grab another and use it well without much practice, like riding a friend's bike. But then enter the parabolic umbrella...a real paradigm change in how it modifies light. You can't really guess...

“Inspiration Starts Here”, a TV commercial

2/20/2012: In January I shot a TV commercial for Fit Weight loss and more, entitled "Inspiration Starts Here." It was produced by Pea Green solutions and Infinit films. I made good use of the 9fps frame rate here, however that was not the original intention. We were shooting this with an incredibly tight deadline on set, right after shooting the wide. The sun was setting in minutes and we needed a bunch of frames for options. Forget strobes with that kind of time constraint. We went with natural light and a little bounce. The idea was to get one frame that really sold Samantha (played by the very talented Maiara Walsh) walking away from Taylor...

Lights Resolve music video

9/28/2011: "With the Pieces", a music video for the NY based band Lights Resolve. One crazy and complex concept. Most of the video was lit with projectors, which were showing footage we shot a few days prior. Balancing the light with the projectors, and working with the haze was tough, but the end result was definitely worth the effort. The final video can be seen on my films page.
