Michael Jackson “Slave To The Rhythm” Hologram & Behind the scenes

Another very cool project I worked on recently. I was both a camera operator on the main hologram as well as the Director of photography on the behind the scenes. We shot on Red Dragons and Epics courtesy of Panavision Hollywood, and used a variety of lenses, such as Zeiss Master primes, Panavision Primos, Alura zooms and Angenieux Optimo zooms. Here is the Hologram as seen at the Billboard music awards, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDRTghGZ7XU And here are three behind the scenes videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSaMhHnQvNg&feature=youtu.be & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPcng48uaxw...

“Inspiration Starts Here” BTS video

Long overdue, but here is the behind the scenes video from the shoot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl4_cF3mJ6U. As always, click read more to follow the link. It seems like this commercial is one of the few topics on my sparsely populated blog. A commercial from a year ago. But what about everything else that happened in 2012? Well, I guess I was too busy shooting to blog much. First year in Los Angeles, and an interesting one it was. I'm working on putting together a few more posts soon about what happened in the last year. All sorts of topics, from BTS info to a breakdown of my most used...

Advertisement for Sigma lenses

The latest use of one of my images in the advertising world, this time for Sigma lenses. See my photo at :23 - :28. Click read more below to get to the link. http://videos.sigmaphoto.com/video/47168830 Shot on my Nikon F3 on Kodak gold 800 asa film on lake Talquin in Tallahassee, FL. 90 minute exposure. The F3 is great for long exposure work because you can basically turn the camera off and use the manual mirror lockup mode to shoot multiple hour exposures without draining its little watch cell type battery. That's it for today, but this is the first in a series of posts about my recent work...

New website!

So you are probably wondering why the few previous blog posts on here are all from earlier this year despite a post date of today (August 14th). They are transfers from the old site (same actual web address). I didn't update that old blog or website much because it was very difficult to work with, and lacked a lot of needed functionality. So here we are now, in the wonderful world of wordpress. In the process of designing this new site I re-edited my photography portfolio and finally had a cine reel edited. Major thanks to Dillon Novak for help with both of those. Please check out the updated photography...

Of parabolic umbrellas

7/8/2012: The age old question, Softboxes vs Umbrellas...which is better? The answer is of course neither, they each have pros and cons depending on the situation. They each have a distinct quality of light, and with experience you can guess how the properties of light will effect your subject just by looking at one you've never even used before. That's the beauty of it, once you've used one or two you can grab another and use it well without much practice, like riding a friend's bike. But then enter the parabolic umbrella...a real paradigm change in how it modifies light. You can't really guess...

“Inspiration Starts Here”, a TV commercial

2/20/2012: In January I shot a TV commercial for Fit Weight loss and more, entitled "Inspiration Starts Here." It was produced by Pea Green solutions and Infinit films. It is currenty airing on NBC, ABC and the food network in north and central Florida. You can watch the final cut of it here (click read more...), or on my films page. It was shot on the Panasonic Af-100, but not for the reasons you might think. We could have easily shot on RED or something else. However, I picked the Af-100 to turn its weakness (poor dynamic range) into an advantage. I wanted the highlights to blow out and bloom,...

Empty Sky poster

2/4/2012: Here is the poster (click read more to see). I shot it on my Nikon D3 & Nikkor 70-200/2.8 vr while on set. I made good use of the 9fps frame rate here, however that was not the original intention. We were shooting this with an incredibly tight deadline on set, right after shooting the wide. The sun was setting in minutes and we needed a bunch of frames for options. Forget strobes with that kind of time constraint. We went with natural light and a little bounce. The idea was to get one frame that really sold Samantha (played by the very talented Maiara Walsh) walking away from Taylor...
